LAHORE, May 11, 2025 - The Rural Community Development Society (RCDS), in collaboration with the Punjab Population Innovation Fund (PPIF), is making significant strides in modernizing family planning services across multiple towns in Punjab. Recent field visits conducted by specialized RCDS teams have highlighted both progress and challenges in their ongoing efforts to strengthen reproductive health awareness and accessibility.
Digital Registration System Transforms Client Management
A key innovation being introduced is the tablet-based Health Information Management System (HIMS) app for online client registration. This digital transformation aims to streamline data collection, improve tracking accuracy, and enhance reporting capabilities. Service Providers (SPs) at various clinics, including Hafiz Clinic in Model Town Tehsil and Fatima Maternity Home in Chung Barkat Colony, are being equipped with tablets to facilitate this modernization.
"The digital registration process represents a crucial step forward in how we manage family planning services," said Disha Suleman, Quality Assurance Officer (QAO) with RCDS. "However, we've identified that many service providers require basic training on using digital tools effectively."
Community-Based Support Network Established
The initiative has established a multi-tiered support system to enhance outreach effectiveness. Each service area now features:
- FP Champions who work directly in communities to mobilize potential clients and raise awareness about family planning options
- Mother Leaders who specifically engage with women receiving assistance through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP)
- Service Providers who offer clinical guidance and contraceptive services
This community-based approach aims to create sustainable awareness networks that can operate effectively at the grassroots level.
Comprehensive Education on Contraceptive Methods
During field visits, the RCDS team, comprising Disha Suleman, Nagina, Waseem, and Muhammad Yousaf, conducted educational sessions on both permanent and emergency contraceptive methods. Visual aids explained procedures such as vasectomy and tubal ligation, along with detailed information about emergency contraception options including Copper IUDs, Ella (ulipristal acetate), and Plan B One-Step.
"Comprehensive education is essential to informed decision-making," explained Nagina, another QAO involved in the initiative. "We're ensuring that our community representatives have accurate information about all available methods."
Challenges Remain in Rural Implementation
Despite progress, several challenges were identified during the field visits. Limited internet connectivity in rural areas threatens to hamper real-time data entry using the HIMS app. Additionally, some BISP beneficiaries have shown resistance to family planning adoption, requiring more intensive counseling approaches.
The team visited multiple locations including Model Town Kanna, Johar Town Lahore, and Munsra Ahbab Colony, meeting with local service providers like Rizvana Sikavat (Hafiz Clinic), Warda (Huma Maternity Clinic), and Shaheen Aslam (Ayesha Maternity Clinic).
"Ongoing training, improved internet accessibility, and persistent community sensitization will be key to ensuring the success and sustainability of these interventions," noted Waseem, a Senior Manager with the RCDS team.
The RCDS-PPIF partnership continues to monitor implementation and address challenges to improve family planning services across Punjab, with a particular focus on reaching underserved communities through innovative approaches and digital solutions.

About RCDS: The Rural Community Development Society (RCDS) was established in 1995 by a group of young professionals in Mandi Faizabad, a small town located 65 kilometers from Punjab's provincial capital. Under the visionary leadership of Muhammad Murtaza, these passionate individuals created an organization dedicated to helping ultra-poor households break the cycle of poverty. The founding members devoted their initial years to crucial groundwork—conducting community organization efforts, area profiling, multi-dimensional social development studies, and comprehensive poverty assessments. With support from local philanthropists, RCDS has evolved into a significant force for socio-economic development, focusing on Human & Institutional Development, Social Mobilization, Livelihood & Employment opportunities, and Physical Infrastructure Development throughout Punjab.
About PPIF: The Punjab Population Innovation Fund supports innovative initiatives aimed at addressing population growth challenges through improved family planning access and education.
