Hassan Murtaza Rejects Punjab LG Bill, Says It Turns Reps into 'Slaves of Bureaucracy
Lahore : Expressing concern over the proposed Punjab Local Government Bill, General Secretary People’s Party Central Punjab Syed Hassan Murtaza has said that the bill has made local government representatives slaves to bureaucracy, making the Deputy Commissioner a watchtower of powers is the negation of the local system. He said that there will be no elected representative to check the powers of the DC and the optional transfer of powers to the lower level will be at the will of the provincial government. The General Secretary of the People’s Party emphasized that this bill is in conflict with Article 140-A of the Constitution of Pakistan, under which DCs will also affect the constituencies. He clarified that the real purpose of this legislation is to disempower the public representatives of the opposing political parties. He said that the PML-N wants to give the impression of establishing local governments by bringing a lame bill, the People’s Party will not accept the Local Government Bill without empowered public representatives.
