Malaika Raza Calls President's Child Marriage Bill Signing 'Revolutionary Step'
PPP Celebrates Major Win as Child Marriage Bill Becomes Law
ISLAMABAD - Following President Asif Ali Zardari's signing of the Child Marriage Bill 2025, Malaika Raza, General Secretary of the Pakistan Peoples Party Human Rights Cell, has declared this historic step a major victory for the protection of women's and children's rights.
In her response, Malaika Raza stated that President Asif Ali Zardari's historic step will open new paths for reform in the country. The signing of the Child Marriage Bill has now legally imposed a ban on marriages of those under 18 years of age, which is a revolutionary measure. She further stated that this is a major victory in preventing early marriages and protecting the rights of women and children. This law will not only provide protection to girls but will also give them new hope for education and health.
The PPP Human Rights Cell's General Secretary emphasized that despite political and social pressure, the President has prioritized the future of girls. This decision demonstrates how the Pakistan People's Party leadership remains committed to principles even during difficult times. Malaika Raza said that legislation against child marriage will now provide girls with better opportunities to pursue education. When girls complete their education before marriage, they will be able to play a role not only in their own betterment but also in the improvement of their families and society.
Praising this historic step at the federal level, she said that the time has come for other provinces to also move toward such legislation. Sindh has already taken initiative in this regard; now Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa should also follow the same path. Malaika Raza said that this law cannot remain limited to Islamabad Capital Territory alone. All children of Pakistan, regardless of which province they are in, deserve this kind of protection.
The PPP Human Rights Cell's General Secretary stated in her announcement that they pay tribute to President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari, Senator Sherry Rehman, and MNA Sharmila Farooqui. This law is the result of their tireless efforts and determination. She further said that Senator Sherry Rehman in particular showed exemplary courage in presenting this bill in the Senate. Despite pressure from opposing elements, she remained firm in her position and ultimately achieved success.
Malaika Raza said that while legislation has been accomplished, the real challenge now lies in its implementation. We must also educate people at the societal level about why early marriages are harmful. She said that through education and awareness, we can effectively implement this law. Parents must be made to understand that girls' education and health should be their priority, not rushing them into marriage.
The PPP Human Rights Cell's General Secretary said that this law marks the beginning of a new era for Pakistan. When our girls become educated, they will play an important role in the country's development. Concluding her statement, Malaika Raza said that the Pakistan People's Party has always struggled for the rights of women and children. From Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, and now to President Asif Ali Zardari, this tradition continues. This law is proof that the PPP remains committed to its principles and is working for the welfare of the people.
