Political System Cannot Be Improved Without Unbiased Elections: Raja Pervaiz Ashraf
Sambrial/Lahore: PPP Central Punjab President and former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said that the political system and the legislatures cannot be improved without unbiased and fair elections. He stressed that interfering in the election process by a few people is not acceptable and no party should try to do so.
Addressing an emergency press conference at City President Sambrial Ahsan Ghuman's residence, flanked by General Secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza and Asif Bashir Bhagat, Ashraf called upon the Election Commission to notice apparent rigging and violence in PP-52's by-elections. Ashraf alleged that local PML-N leadership had arranged attacks on PPP polling agents and workers in Rolian, Begowali, Metranwali, and Bubindoki Chamyah, and threatened that such acts bring disrepute to the government.
Ashraf claimed that such malpractices put a question mark on the whole electoral process and demanded peaceful, fair elections. He said the constituency has turned into the PPP stronghold and asked why the government would jeopardize its credibility for one seat. He accused that all those who committed electoral malpractices were conspiring against the coalition government.
The ex-PM condemned excessive loyalists, saying, "Many try to be more loyal than the king," but he was optimistic that the Punjab Chief Minister wouldn't approve of such a strategy. He emphasized that real winners should be welcomed, but the process should be clean.
PPP Central Punjab General Secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza blamed PML-N for depending upon biased umpires, terming the 2024 elections the "worst rigged in history." He stated that the party would issue a white paper on the by-election and criticized the intimidation of PPP workers at polling stations.
Senior party leaders, such as Chaudhry Aslam Gul, Khurram Pervaiz Raja, Sharukh Pervaiz Raja, and others, also attended the conference.
