From Global Hypocrisy to Local Failures: PPP Leader Murtaza Launches Scathing Critique of Govt Policies
Lahore : Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Hassan Murtaza took a firm stance on national and international affairs during a public address in Lahore on Saturday. He declared that the time for mere condemnations has passed, emphasizing that it is now crucial to demand answers from the United States. Criticizing global silence, he pointed to the repeated attacks on Iran and the ongoing brutality in Palestine as evidence of double standards.
Murtaza questioned why the United Nations has failed to resolve the Kashmir issue in accordance with its own resolutions, urging international institutions to fulfill their responsibilities. Turning to domestic issues, he outright rejected the federal budget, stating that the PPP completely opposes it as it neglects the interests of ordinary citizens. He accused the government of destroying the agricultural sector, warning that imposing agricultural taxes would further devastate farmers.
Highlighting the economic crisis, Murtaza said inflation has reached unbearable levels, with prices increasing four times a year. He condemned the sugar mafia in Punjab, alleging it operates under government patronage. He also raised concerns over severe water shortages, stating that the lack of irrigation water is crippling agriculture.
Mocking what he called wasteful spending, Murtaza criticized the Punjab government for splurging 32 crore rupees on rose water sprinkling on roads during Eid while children lack access to basic eye medicines. He sarcastically remarked that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is so fond of self-promotion that "even trash bins carry her photos." He accused the government of spending billions on propaganda while delivering zero performance.
Murtaza demanded that the government acknowledge the real causes of inflation, whether it be war or dollar fluctuations. He also called for the reversal of the Senate chairman’s salary increase, terming it unjust. Advocating for laborers' rights, he warned that failing to raise wages in Sindh would be an injustice.
In his concluding remarks, Murtaza accused the government of pressuring the PPP to support the budget without consulting coalition partners, calling it undemocratic. He asserted that while attempts are being made to force the PPP to abandon its allies, the party will not compromise on public interests.
