KARACHI – In a major infrastructure development, the Chief Minister has approved a new corridor of Shahrah-e-Bhutto, extending from Qayyumabad to East Wharf, in a move aimed at revolutionizing Karachi’s logistics and transportation framework.

The proposed corridor is designed to significantly ease port traffic flow towards the Motorway, with officials calling it a “game-changer” for Pakistan’s logistics network. Once completed, the route will enable seamless movement of cargo and commuters from the industrial hubs to national highways and the port.

As part of the broader initiative, the full stretch of Shahrah-e-Bhutto — from Korangi Causeway to Kathore — is expected to be fully operational for commuters by December 2025.

In addition, the Link Road connecting the National Highway to the Motorway—catering to industrial zones like Port Qasim, Landhi, and Korangi—will also be opened shortly, enhancing access and easing congestion in these high-traffic zones.

A private firm has submitted a proposal under the Design-Finance-Operate-Transfer (DFOT) model for the corridor, which includes a 16.5-kilometre stretch from Jam Sadiq Interchange to Karachi Port. Notably, the project features a 10.4-kilometre elevated section towards the port, providing uninterrupted passage to freight traffic.

The new route will integrate key city points, connecting Qayyumabad to Boat Basin, Ziauddin Chowrangi, and East Wharf, further enhancing intra-city linkages.

The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Unit has been instructed to swiftly obtain No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from all relevant federal and provincial authorities and to initiate an environmental study without delay.

Meanwhile, work on the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system has been accelerated, and the redesign of the Sohrab Goth roundabout is underway to address severe traffic bottlenecks.

This ambitious corridor is a key component of the Sindh government’s broader strategy to modernize Karachi’s transportation infrastructure and support economic growth through improved connectivity.
