The Thai government is calling for international condemnation of Cambodia, accusing its military of initiating a border attack that targeted civilians and resulted in numerous casualties.
Government Spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub, representing the Ad Hoc Centre for Thailand - Cambodia Border Situation (Team Thailand), stated that evidence clearly shows Cambodian forces fired first. He accused Cambodia of being a war-monger that disregards human rights by continuously using heavy weapons against civilian targets.
An army report presented to the center indicated that Cambodian soldiers have engaged in provocative actions and violated agreements since early this year. On the morning of July 24th, a Cambodian drone reportedly flew into Thai territory to provoke a response, after which Cambodian soldiers opened fire.
The report specified that Cambodian forces used 122-millimeter multiple rocket launchers and rocket-propelled grenades, firing into civilian communities in Phanom Dong Rak District, Surin Province, and other border areas. Shells struck a hospital and homes, injuring many civilians, including a seriously wounded five-year-old child. Security and administrative officials have since evacuated residents to safety.
