Lahore – February 3, 2025

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in Punjab is finally recognizing the importance of its Traders' Wing, following mounting pressure from the party’s top leadership. According to insider sources from Bilawal House, party top leadership has urged the provincial organization to focus on strengthening the party's grassroots presence rather than relying on mere photo ops and paperwork.

The move comes after Peoples Voice recently published an article by Hassan Abbas, highlighting the absence of PPP's Traders' Wing in Punjab—particularly in Lahore, Pakistan’s economic and cultural hub. The article pointed out that despite once being the largest party in the province, the PPP has failed to establish itself among the business community since the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in 2007.

PPP’s Traders' Wing: A Forgotten Legacy

Under Benazir Bhutto, the PPP enjoyed strong support from Lahore’s trading community. The party’s pro-business policies, including tax reductions and trade-friendly initiatives, helped it secure key seats in past elections. However, since her death, the party’s presence among traders has eroded, while rival parties like the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have built strong traders' wings to mobilize urban voters.

Critics argue that PPP’s leadership in Punjab has failed to engage traders and has instead misrepresented the situation to Bilawal Bhutto, claiming there is no interest in the party within the business community. However, workers believe that the real issue is an internal power struggle, where some leaders resist allowing new faces to connect with the chairman.

Party activists have called on Bilawal Bhutto to personally oversee the restructuring of the Traders' Wing during his scheduled visit to Lahore on January 20. They have also urged him to give leadership opportunities to young professionals, including doctors, engineers, lawyers, and IT experts, who wish to contribute to the party’s revival.

PPP Punjab’s New Push for Business Community Engagement

Responding to the concerns raised, PPP Punjab has begun taking steps to engage the trading community. In a recent meeting, Syed Hassan Murtaza, General Secretary of PPP Central Punjab, met with Mujahid Maqsood Butt, President of *Anjuman-e-Tajiran Lahore*, along with PPP leader Ahsan Rizvi and Anjuman-e-Tajiran’s Information Secretary, Hafiz Sheikh Ala-ud-Din.

During the discussion, issues faced by the business community were brought to the table, and Hassan Murtaza assured traders that PPP would facilitate a meeting with Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider to address their concerns.

Mujahid Maqsood Butt extended an invitation to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to meet with traders in Lahore, emphasizing the need for direct engagement with the business community. He also called for urgent relief measures, including reductions in electricity and gas prices, and an end to the excessive tax burden on traders.

PPP’s Path Forward in Punjab

The meeting marks a shift in PPP’s approach to urban politics in Punjab. While the party has traditionally focused on rural support, ignoring the traders’ vote has weakened its position in urban areas. With PTI and PML-N already dominating Lahore’s business circles, PPP faces an uphill battle in regaining lost ground.

To regain relevance, the party must follow through on its commitments, ensuring that its Traders' Wing is not just revived in name but is actively working to address the concerns of the business community. As PPP leadership in Punjab moves toward engagement, all eyes will be on Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s upcoming visit to see whether real action follows these recent developments.
