JahanAra Manzoor Wattoo Stresses Diversity as a Strength at Lahore Interfaith Event
Ms. Watoo highlighted Pakistan's rich tapestry of religions, cultures, and languages, emphasizing that the country’s diversity is its greatest strength.
In a bid to strengthen religious coexistence and promote social justice, JahanAra Manzoor Watoo, Vice Chairperson of the Punjab Social Protection Authority, attended a significant interfaith harmony event held at a private hotel in Lahore. The event was organized by the Center for Law and Justice and witnessed the attendance of high-ranking dignitaries and guests from diverse religious and intellectual backgrounds.
The special occasion was graced by Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, Khayal Das Kohistani, who, along with several distinguished guests, underscored the importance of unity in a multicultural society. In her keynote address, Vice Chairperson Ms. Watoo highlighted Pakistan's rich tapestry of religions, cultures, and languages, emphasizing that the country’s diversity is its greatest strength. She remarked, "Interfaith harmony is not merely a matter of tolerance; it is the recognition of each other's existence, respect for human dignity, and the practical encouragement of mutual coexistence."
Drawing attention to the progressive initiatives of the Punjab Social Protection Authority, Vice Chairperson Watoo detailed several flagship programs, including Zewar-e-Taleem, Aghosh, Masaawat, Ham Qadam, and Nayi Zindagi. She explained that these projects are designed to include eligible individuals solely based on a poverty score, with no discrimination on the basis of religion, language, gender, or any other affiliation. "Our programs are a testament to our commitment to equality and support for the underprivileged," she stated.
The Vice Chairperson also called attention to the pressing issues confronting minority communities in Pakistan, such as forced religious conversions, child marriage, and various forms of exploitation. She stressed that these challenges require immediate and robust intervention at both policy and community levels. "To ensure a just society, it is crucial that we implement proactive measures and engage in sincere policy-level discussions to overcome these barriers," JahanAra Watoo added.
Emphasizing the transformative potential of religious leadership, Ms. Watoo noted that religious leaders can play a pivotal role in fostering societal change. "Their voices have the power to enhance social harmony, promote brotherhood, and foster justice," she said, urging influential religious figures to engage constructively in communal dialogue.
At the event’s conclusion, all participants reaffirmed their commitment to building a society where every individual—irrespective of religion, socio-economic status, or language—can feel secure, equal, and dignified. The collective resolve of the attendees underscored the belief that sustained efforts in promoting interfaith understanding and social equity are essential for the nation's progress.
This gathering marks an important step forward in Pakistan's journey toward a more inclusive and harmonious society, setting a precedent for future initiatives in religious and cultural integration.
