PPP Demands Audit of Punjab’s Canal Water, Warns Against New Canal Construction Without Planning

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Central Secretary Information Nadeem Afzal Chan has demanded an audit of canal water in Punjab and questioned the provincial government about which canals will have reduced water flow to fill the proposed Cholistan Canal. He raised these concerns while speaking to the media after offering condolences and participating in Fatiha prayers at the residence of Usman Malik, PPP’s Deputy General Secretary for Central Punjab, following the death of his mother.

Among those present on the occasion were Aziz Malik, Agha Syed Taqi, Abrar Qureshi, Nadeem Altaf, Javed Farooqi, and Nazir Bhatti. Chan warned that constructing a new canal without proper planning could severely impact Punjab’s vast agricultural land. He pointed out that Punjab’s canals are already operating on reduced water flow due to IRSA’s scheduled shortages.

Chan emphasized that the canal water issue is fundamentally Punjab’s problem, with farmers facing acute water scarcity. He stated that water flow in Punjab’s canals has dropped to less than 50 percent, revealing that in his own area, Mandi Bahauddin, the flow is just 40 percent. He further alleged that Punjab’s farmers are receiving even less water than the 40 percent shortage announced by IRSA.
