Lahore: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Central Secretary Information Nadeem Afzal Chan has called for an audit of canal water distribution in Punjab, urging the provincial government to clarify which canals will face reduced water supply in order to fill the Cholistan canal. He made these remarks while speaking to the media after offering condolences at the residence of PPP Central Punjab Deputy General Secretary Usman Malik, whose mother had recently passed away.

Prominent PPP leaders including Aziz Malik, Agha Syed Taqi, Abrar Qureshi, Nadeem Altaf, Javed Farooqi, and Nazir Bhatti were also present on the occasion.

Chan warned that constructing a new canal without proper planning could negatively impact Punjab’s vast agricultural lands. He pointed out that all canals in Punjab are currently operating with reduced water allocations, as scheduled by the Indus River System Authority (IRSA).

“The canal issue is fundamentally a crisis for Punjab’s farmers,” Chan said. “Water flow in Punjab’s canals is currently below 50%, and in my own area, Mandi Bahauddin, it’s down to just 40%. Farmers in Punjab are receiving even less than the 40% shortfall officially declared by IRSA,” he claimed.

In a separate interview, Nadeem Afzal Chan lashed out at the Punjab government, calling it “a collection of fake technocrats.” He also questioned the administration over the wheat scandal, saying, “The wheat-thief government must be held accountable.”

Chan further remarked, “When a political party is targeted through non-political means, it doesn’t harm the party—it actually strengthens it.” He reiterated that farmers are the backbone of agriculture, but the Punjab government continues to neglect them.

Commenting on the broader political situation, Chan stated, “Those in jail are prisoners, and those outside are also prisoners,” a statement reflecting the perceived constraints faced by political voices in the country today.
