PPP Strongly Criticizes Government Over Disputed Canal Project
The PPP Information Secretary declared the water crisis as the country's biggest problem, saying "The most significant issue at present is related to canals."
ISLAMABAD (Special Report) - Pakistan People's Party's Central Information Secretary Nadeem Afzal Chan and Senior Leader Chaudhry Manzoor held a joint press conference where they discussed in detail the water crisis, terrorism, and governmental affairs. They severely criticized the current government coalition, particularly regarding water distribution issues.
Nadeem Afzal Chan began the press conference by stating that "Pakistan is facing a serious situation right now." Condemning the recent terrorist incident in India, he said, "We condemn terrorism wherever it occurs." He further added that "Pakistan has been a major victim of terrorism; we know how much we have been affected by terrorism."
The PPP Information Secretary declared the water crisis as the country's biggest problem, saying "The most significant issue at present is related to canals." He informed that "Discussions with the government are also ongoing regarding political matters."
Chaudhry Manzoor also raised important points during the press conference. He said, "I held a press conference in Lahore on April 3rd, and I am representing Punjab on the water issue." He questioned, "Why is the Council of Common Interests meeting not being convened?"
Chaudhry Manzoor elaborated on the water shortage, explaining that "The existing canals are already experiencing water shortages. There is a water shortage; how will this problem be solved? Where will the water come from?" Drawing attention to farmers' difficulties, he said, "Farmers are already facing problems, if crops cannot be cultivated, what will happen?" He emphasized that "The People's Party stands with farmers on the water issue."
Nadeem Afzal Chan then spoke again, stating that "The greatest need at this time is to strengthen the federation and the state." He harshly criticized the current rulers, saying, "They call themselves the heirs of Punjab, but you are not heirs. You cannot be the heirs of Punjab; you are merely buyers. You have sold properties worth billions and stripped away public facilities."
Clarifying PPP's position, Nadeem Afzal Chan explained, "We are allies of the parliamentary system, not of you. We are paying the price of being allies. We are ready to debate issues with the government."
Describing the country's current situation as a "crisis," he commented on the political landscape before the budget, saying, "The PPP will clear ambiguities regarding the government before the budget." He also stated, "We want to proceed politically with our allies; we don't want to divide the public. We will not abandon civility and expect the same from others."
Regarding the canal issue, he revealed that "Rana Sanaullah has contacted us to reopen the closed highways in Sindh." However, he severely criticized the Prime Minister over resolving the water issue, saying, "I believe if the Prime Minister is helpless on the canal issue, then he should resign."
He further remarked, "I see the Prime Minister flying around in helicopters, getting pictures taken," and demanded that "The Prime Minister should convene a CCI meeting and take up the canal matter."
In the press conference, both leaders called for raising the water issue at the national level and demanded immediate action from the government, especially to resolve the difficulties faced by farmers.
