Sources have revealed that, following the Pakistan Peoples Party’s firm stance and unyielding pressure, the federal government has agreed to reverse its decision to construct the disputed canal in Sindh.
According to insiders, the official announcement is expected this evening. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to meet PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari at 4:00 PM in Islamabad today, and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah will also be in attendance. The agenda will focus squarely on formally withdrawing the canal project and charting a path forward.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had previously declared that, regardless of who devised the plan, the Sindh government would never allow its approval. He noted that work on the canal was halted in July 2024, and since November, the project’s clearance by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has been suspended. “We remain dissatisfied that the project has not yet been officially scrapped,” he said.
Murad Ali Shah further warned that if the federal government fails to backtrack, a fresh wave of protests would be inevitable. “Should this plan slip through our hands, there will be no option left but to resume street demonstrations,” he stated. The formal declaration later today will determine whether this political deadlock is finally resolved.
