PPP Leader Khalid Gill Calls for Formation of Central Minority Wing
Khalid Gill has formally requested the party’s top leadership to establish a Central Minority Wing
Lahore, May 2, 2025: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and minority rights advocate Khalid Gill has formally requested the party’s top leadership to establish a Central Minority Wing and nominate a Christian as a member of the Central Executive Committee (CEC).
In a detailed letter addressed to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Senior Vice-Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, General Secretary Humaayun Khan, Information Secretary Nadeem Afzal Gondal, Finance Secretary Amna Paracha, and the members of both the Central and Federal Executive Councils, Gill reminded the leadership of his February 22, 2020 meeting with Chairman Bhutto Zardari at Zardari House, Lahore. During that meeting, he says, the chairman instructed him to work for the party both in Canada and Pakistan. Honoring that directive, Gillreturned permanently to Pakistan on March 23, 2023, and has since been serving the party voluntarily.
Gill’s letter highlights several concerns:
-
Absence of a Minority Wing: Unlike other major political parties in Pakistan, PPP does not have a dedicated central minority wing to organize and represent Christian, Hindu, Sikh, and other religious minority communities.
-
Vacant CEC Seat: The seat reserved for a Christian member on the CEC has remained vacant since the martyrdom of Shahbaz Bhatti in March 2011. Despite repeated requests over the past 15 years, no Christian leader has been appointed to that position.
-
Organizational Impact: He argues that this neglect has fostered a sense of alienation among PPP’s core minority supporters—many of whom have contributed significantly, including sacrifices in the party’s struggle.
-
Competence and Reach: Gill asserts his own credentials, noting his grassroots influence from Gwadar to Bhimber, from Khyber to Karachi, and from Kemari to Kashmir. He emphasizes his understanding of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s ideology and his capacity to strengthen and mobilize the party’s organizational structure across all provinces—including Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pothohar, and Southern Punjab.
He also criticizes the practice—since 2002—of allocating minority-reserved positions to personal protégés and politically expedient appointees, rather than to genuine community representatives, saying it has deepened feelings of marginalization.
Requests:
-
Establish a Central Minority Wing of PPP
-
Nominate a Christian member of the Central Executive Committee.
By granting these requests, Gill believes the PPP can harness full minority support, energize its grassroots network, and secure a historic electoral victory—paving the way for Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to assume the office of Prime Minister.
